The Studio

Closing in on the one year anniversary of us being in our current shop space, I thought it would be extremely fitting to let you behind the curtain and see the shop itself.

We inhabit a 3,000 square foot space located on the 2nd floor of a historical garment building in Downtown Los Angeles. While the building tenants are still individual garment factories by majority, there is a growing number of studios used as creative spaces to artists, designers, and fabricators, so we fit well into the mix.

Utilizing the shop as 50/50 as we could. Half of the shop contains all our machinery; two tablesaws, bandsaw, jointer, planer, miter saw, and a shaper all packaged together under one main dust collection system. The other half is our shop tables, surfaces are crucial in our shop. Laying out full projects, tables, sketches, and hand tools all in one concentrated area to facilitate the most efficient work space possible.

A popularly prominent section of the workshop is the office. An enjoyable place to be amongst the hustle and bustle of the studio, warmed by plant life and beautiful turnings. Capped off with a solid Old Growth Redwood door that pays respect to what our studio is all about, crafting with these beautiful materials. A nice reminder that it’s the first visual when the shop door opens or closes.

Meet the Maker

Meet Dennis Middleton, owner and lead designer of Copperhead Furniture.

An enthusiast of craftsmanship and the art of functionality, Dennis is no stranger to the trades. Originated in the world of automotive metal fabrication building suspensions and TIG welded roll cages for off-road vehicles.

Intrigued by the possibilities, he brought that skill into furniture making for friends & family as a hobby back in 2012. That ignited the introduction to woodworking and furniture design.

Sparked by the possibilities and skill required to create from arguably the least forgivable material, wood, the pivot to furniture was made.

Starting out working with an arborist learning how to mill, process, and dry lumber. An educational and intimate relationship to the material that is then used as the foundation to create with.

He then moved on from that to start working in a couple wood-shops around Los Angeles before starting Copperhead Furniture in 2019.
